Design Six: Creating alignment

This design may be the most useful of all the processes listed here. Management expert Peter Senge defines alignment as “what happens when people in a group actually start functioning as a whole.” Alignment is correlated to engagement, which leads to inspired action. This is a process to master as a leader.

Here’s what I’d like to do and how I intend to implement it. Describe your intended outcomes and the path you will use to produce those outcomes.

What thoughts or questions do you have? To find out what people are thinking, ask an open-ended question that allows them to express anything and everything.

Is this clear? Does it make sense? Ask whether they are clear about your intentions.

Is it worth doing? Ask if they see the value in this proposal.

Is there anything in the way of your supporting this? Ask people if they have concerns about the proposal.

Is there anything missing that would help? Once you know what is in the way of their supporting the proposal, ask whether anything is missing that would make a difference to alignment if it were included.

If we address these items, will you align? Once you have the items identified in steps 5 and 6, ask the group whether, if you promise to address their concerns and requests, they are now able to align with the decision or plan.
